Session on Power Engineering

Power Engineering is the branch of electrical engineering which deals with Generation, Transmission, Distribution and storage of Energy or Power. It also deals with electrical devices and electric power connected to the systems like Motors, Generators and Transformers.  Power engineering is a network of interconnected components which convert different forms of energy to electrical energy. Modern power engineering has three main sub components: Generation system, Transmission system and Distribution system. First one deals with production of electricity. The next one deals with transmitting the power to the load centres. Finally, the power gets distributed to the customers.

Session on Power Systems

A network of electrical components designed to supply, transfer, store and use the power is known as Power system. An electric power system comprises of three areas: Generation system, Transmission system and Distribution system. The generators supply the power. The transmitter transfers the power from the generated centre to the load centre. The distributors feed the power to homes and industries. Smaller power systems can be seen at hospitals, industries and other residential areas.

Session on Power Generation

The process of generating electric power from the primary source of energy for domestic use is Power Generation. In an electric power industry, the power generation is the first step of delivering the electricity to the users which is further followed by transmission, distribution, storage and recovery. Electricity is generated using Power plants. The power can also be generated at a power station by electromechanical generators, mostly driven by heat engines working with the help of nuclear fission, combustion, energy from the flowing water, geothermal power and photovoltaics.

Session on Power transmission and distribution 

Power is defined as the energy per unit time. The transfer of energy from where it is generated to the endpoint where its applied for a useful work is known as power transmission. The power transmission is done with the help of overhead lines and electrical grids. It can also be transmitted by wireless modes like electromagnetic fields, radio waves and microwaves. The electric power distribution is the final stage. It collects the electricity from the transmission lines and distribute it to the consumers. Primary distribution carries medium voltage power and supplies to the nearby customers. For residential and commercial customers, the power is distributed with the help of secondary distributors.

Session on Power system protection

The protection of electrical power systems from faults by separating the damaged parts from the rest of the electrical networks. The devices that are used to protect the power systems from faults are called protection devices. Electrical systems may be kept open or enclosed. During their lifetime, they may undergo faults due to several reasons. It is necessary to protect these equipment from those damages and for human safety under abnormal conditions. It is done by electrical protection systems. It is of two kinds: Apparatus protection and System protection. In apparatus protection, the faults can be detected and then protected. In system protection, the proximity of the system during unstable operations are detected and it is restored to stable operating points to prevent the equipment from damages.

The conversion of power from one form to another in a clean, efficient, effective and compact manner for its later utilization is known as Power electronics. In other words, it is the application of solid-state electronics to the control and energy conversion. In modern systems these conversions were done with the help of semi-conductor devices like diodes, thyristors and transistors. The electronic systems deal with the transmission and processing of signals whereas the power electronics process only few amounts of electrical energy. Industrial application of power electronics is Variable speed drive (VSD) that is used to control an induction motor. There are four power conversion systems: AC to DC, AC to AC, DC to DC, DC to AC.

Session on Hydro power            

The electricity generated from the energy of flowing water or fast-moving water is known as hydro power or hydroelectricity. This is considered a renewable source of energy because the water cycle is constantly renewed by the sun. The most common type of hydro power plant uses a dam on a river to store water in the reservoir. Released water from the reservoir flows through a turbine, spinning the turbine, which in turn activates a generator to produce electricity. But hydro power always does not require large dams. Few power plants use mini version of canals to connect the river water with the help of turbines. Other kind of hydro power plant, pumped storage plant is used to store power. The energy is transmitted from a power grid into the electric generators. After that the generators spin the turbines in backward direction, which causes to pump the water from a river or lower reservoir to an upper reservoir, there the power is stored. After that the water is released from the upper reservoir back to the lower reservoir or river and that flow spins the turbines forward, starting the generators to generate electricity. A small or micro-hydroelectric power system can produce enough electricity for a home, farm or ranch. Hydro power contributes to 10% of world electricity generation. Although there is no air emission however water quality and wildlife habitats can be affected. Work is going on to design the power plants in such a way that it causes minimum affect to the river water. Undoubtedly it improves the wildlife’s river habitat but at the same time cause the reduction in power plant output. Sometimes this power plant hinders the life of the fishes so different approaches are employed such as fish ladders and improved turbines to assist the migration of fishes and lower their death rate.

Session on Wind Power
The air flow (Wind energy) through the turbines are converted into the electrical form of energy and it is renewable form of energy. Air flow through the wind turbines is converted to the electrical energy using the power generators. The energy in the wind turns two or three propeller-like blades around a rotor. The rotor is connected to the main shaft, which spins a generator to create electricity. This energy is used for the electricity generations which either uses the warm surface water or boiling the sea water turning it to the turbine further activating the generator. There are no fuel costs, no harmful gases are produced but it may cause noise pollution to the surrounding people. The turbines do not pollute the environment as if power plants do and do not cause any environmental effects like global warming, acid rain and asthma. Batteries can store electricity which is generated by wind turbines and these can be used in future when there is no wind. In this situation, energy produced is converted into compressed air. This is generally stored in underground caverns or in large above-ground tanks.

One of the most prominent and promising renewable energyBiofuels can be converted directly to the liquid fuels. Biofuels is widely used for the transportation. Green energy is energy which is generated without any negative effect on the environment. The greenhouse gases increase the Earth's atmospheric temperature, leading to climatic changes. The air and water pollution produced by natural gas and coal plants causes breathing problems, neurological damage, heart attacks, and cancer. So, generating electricity from renewable energy rather than fossil fuels saves the human health and the environment.

Fuel cells are a remarkable power source. They store energy in two naturally occurring elements i.e., oxygen and hydrogen, and form a single waste product i.e., pure water. The energy storage devices are those which stores the energy generated for the future use. Session on Photovoltaic System

The Photovoltaic systems are devices which provides solar energy by using photovoltaic effect. It is also known as PV system or Solar power system. The PV system is made of a solar panel which absorbs the sunlight and converts it to energy, a solar inverter to change the DC current into AC current, mounting, cabling and other electrical components. It may be small, roof-top mounted, building integrated systems depending on their purpose and most of the systems are Grid connected. The performance of a PV system can be improved by integrating a solar tracking system with it. Since the use of Photovoltaic cells are increasing rapidly, the prices have reduced drastically. It is one the environmental friendly source of energy.

Session on Emerging Technologies and Alternative Energy          

Alternative energy is an energy source that is an alternative to fossil fuel. All these alternatives are intended to address concerns about such fossil fuels, such as its high carbon dioxide emissions, an important factor in global warming. Hydroelectric, marine energy, wind, solar power and geothermal are the alternative sources of energy. The nature of the constitutes of an alternative energy source has changed significantly over time, as have arguments regarding energy use. This will lead to less usage of coal, oil and gas thus prevents these sources from depletion. Spikes in electricity bills happened in Southern Australia when wind was not driving the turbines responsible for a huge portion of the counties power. This led to the government to reintegrate a gas-powered station which will supply the power while the wind turbines were powerless. Even though solar energy is renewable form, the creation of solar panels requires silica to be mined and used thus affecting the environment.

Market Analysis

Introduction:
 Power Engineering is a subfield of Energy Engineering and Electrical Engineering that deals with the generation, transmission, dispersion and usage of electric force and the electrical gadgets associated with such frameworks including generators, motors, engines and transformers

Importance and Scope:
 Power Engineering is significant for the society to function well. Renewable power production and new energy saving apparatus are undergoing a rapid development process to deal with environmental issues like global warming, pollution and so on. In the upcoming days, people will be forced to research and develop alternative energy sources. In the current scenario, the rate of fossil fuel usage will lead to an energy crisis. To balance the energy crisis many companies in the energy industry are innovating new technologies to extract energy from renewable sources. 
While the rate of improvement is slow, mainstream awareness among public and government pressures are raising. We need more non-polluting renewable energy systems like wind power, solar power and the use of electric cars for transportation instead of fuels, to reduce CO2 emissions and create a Green environment. Energy from the atmosphere will be an alternative energy source for the future. To protect our environment, we should opt to use non-polluting energy sources to produce electricity. 
           
Global Markets:  
The worldwide energy demands are rapidly varying. Customary focuses of interest are being overwhelmed by quickly developing markets. The energy mix is moving, driven by innovative enhancements and ecological concerns. Like never, our industry needs to adjust to meet those changing energy demands. This is the main theme of the Power Engineering.
